Chairs

A key part of the growth strategy for the Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research is in establishing a team of chairs whose expertise and vision will help drive each aspect of the overall vision. In some cases, a chair position has transformed into two “innovator” roles, as well as a program, in order to best address emerging areas of interest and new opportunities.

I) Appointments

Martha Rogers Chair in Heart Failure Training and Education

Dr. Michael McDonald appointed June 2021

Goal: To support and grow educational opportunities for our community of basic science and clinical trainees while building out the Heart Function Fellowship program, attracting high-quality fellows from around the world, and integrating educational strategies in heart failure at all academic levels.

Ted Rogers Chair in Cardiovascular Engineering

Daniel Franklin appointed May 2021

This chair will support our Translational Biology and Engineering Program and, as a result, all collaborators inside and outside the Ted Rogers Centre.

Program in Health Technology and Data Science

Launched in November 2019

This program reflects the Centre’s escalating focus on data science, and is set up to enable greater ‘Big Data’ research currently underway at our Comprehensive Program in Heart Function. It is designed to provide analytical and methodological expertise, spanning traditional biostatistics to advanced machine learning, health system and technology assessment, and quality improvement to the breadth of research underway at the Centre.

Innovator in Congential/Fetal Heart Disease

Dr. Rajiv Chaturvedi appointed December 2019

This endowed scientist position provides additional support to our Cardiac Precision Medicine team. Dr. Chaturvedi’s work has been delayed due to COVID restrictions. He has obtained gene expression data from left ventricular myocardium from a fetal lamb model of hypoplastic left heart syndrome, and is exploring other alternatives for this model. New fetal studies are in planning stages. 

Loretta Rogers Chair in Immunobioengineering

Dr. Slava Epelman appointed April 2018

Goal: Catalyze existing research strengths and bring new expertise to solve unaddressed immunology-related problems in heart failure and regenerative cardiac therapy.

Ted Rogers Chair in Heart Function Outcomes

Dr. Douglas Lee appointed June 2016

Goal: Study how health policy, health system and patient factors affect the natural history and outcomes of individuals with heart failure. The Chair will exploit the unique cardiovascular database, disease modelling and systems biology capacity of the Ted Rogers Centre to inform their studies, integrate novel biological markers and available genetic markers into their analyses and formulate health policy advice.

II) Future Appointments

Ted Rogers Chair in Cardiovascular Systems Biology

This chair will support our Translational Biology and Engineering Program and, as a result, all collaborators inside and outside the Ted Rogers Centre.

Ted Rogers Chair in Translational Genomics

This chair will help drive the mission of our Cardiac Genome Clinic to not only discover novel genomic markers of heart failure, but translate them into clinic impact.

Innovator in Cardiac Genetics

This endowed scientist position provides additional support to our Cardiac Precision Medicine team, and will focus on new avenues of genetic pursuits.
