Engineering of human tissue, with a focus on the heart, is a main research topic of the Zimmermann lab. The seminar will touch upon different models of in vitro organogenesis with applications in disease modelling, drug development, and tissue engineered heart repair. Mechanisms underlying self-organization of pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes into functional myocardium will be discussed. Examples for the application of Engineered Human Myocardium (EHM) in the preclinical development of therapeutic genome editing in patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and the translation of tissue engineered heart failure repair into clinical applications will be presented.
